One of four seriously ill immigrants who were evacuated from a boatload of 50 spotted 60 miles to the South of Gran Canaria on Sunday has died in hospital. They were all transferred to the hospital ship ‘Esperanza del Mar,’ suffering dehydration and severe hypothermia.
The man, who has not been named, died in the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital Insular in Las Palmas on Monday. He was from Sub-Saharan Africa.
Eight illegal immigrants remain in the hospital, some from another boat which reached the island on Saturday with three dead amongst its passengers: six of the eight are still in ICU and the other two have now been transferred to the wards.
The remaining 46 passengers from Sunday’s boat were towed into port at Arguineguín on Monday, many of them in a severely weakened state.
Another 22 illegal immigrants from Algeria were arrested after reaching shore on Mallorca on Monday.
